KNATCOM and UNESCO Regional Office for Eastern Africa Strengthen Strategic Cooperation

The Kenya National Commission for UNESCO (KNATCOM), in collaboration with the UNESCO Regional Office for Eastern Africa in Nairobi, held a consultative meeting to advance shared priorities, deepen institutional cooperation and enhance the contribution of UNESCO programmes to Kenya’s national development agenda. The meeting provided a platform to deliberate on UNESCO’s global, regional and African strategic priorities, identify areas of mutual interest, and explore opportunities to align UNESCO-supported interventions with Kenya’s development agenda, particularly the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Discussions focused on strengthening joint programme development, mobilising resources and building strategic partnerships with relevant government institutions, development partners and other stakeholders. Participants also examined ways to leverage expertise across UNESCO’s five programme areas to address emerging development challenges, optimise available resources and deliver greater impact at national and regional levels. To strengthen implementation and accountability, the meeting concluded with agreed action points aimed at enhancing collaboration and improving programme delivery. These include joint resource mobilisation; regular planning, coordination and monitoring meetings; quarterly sector-based engagements to review progress and identify collaborative opportunities; enhanced cooperation across projects to minimise duplication; the development of cross-programme initiatives; integration of UNESCO’s strategic priorities into programme planning and implementation; and improved public communication and visibility of activities and results. The engagement reaffirmed the importance of a strong, coordinated partnership between KNATCOM and the UNESCO Regional Office for Eastern Africa in translating shared priorities into tangible development outcomes. Through sustained cooperation and strategic engagement, the two institutions aim to advance inclusive and sustainable development across education, the sciences, culture, and communication and information.
