KNATCOM Successfully Coordinated Periodic Review of the Amboseli Biosphere Reserve

The Kenya National Commission for UNESCO (KNATCOM), through the Kenya Man and Biosphere Reserve (K-MAB) Committee, successfully coordinated the 10-year Periodic Review of the Amboseli Biosphere Reserve, from 10th to 12th June 2025. This essential evaluation ensures that biosphere reserves under the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves (WNBR) continue to fulfill their three core functions, namely biodiversity conservation, sustainable development, and logistical support for research, monitoring, and education.

The review process culminated in a multi-stakeholder workshop at Kibo Slopes Hotel, bringing together more than 40 participants. These included representatives from local communities, conservation and development agencies operating in the reserve’s core, buffer, and transition zones, and youth representatives affiliated with the MAB Youth Forum. The inclusive forum enabled shared reflections on the progress and challenges in the management of the Amboseli ecosystem and reinforced community ownership in the biosphere reserve framework.

The Amboseli Biosphere Reserve is globally renowned for its unique biodiversity, climate resilience, and its significance as a stronghold for globally threatened species. The area also boasts a rich cultural heritage and over five decades of long-term ecological research. In addition, it offers important opportunities for transboundary conservation collaboration with Tanzania, as many species move freely across the two countries.

In remarks delivered on behalf of the KNATCOM Ag. Secretary-General/CEO Dr. James Njogu, the Ag. Director of Natural Sciences Dr. George Eshiamwata expressed deep appreciation to all stakeholders involved in the conservation and sustainable management of the Amboseli landscape. He particularly commended the local communities, Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), Amboseli Ecosystem Trust (AET), the County Government of Kajiado, and both state and non-state actors for their unwavering dedication.
