These skills are critical for the 21st Century workforce and in line with the 4th and 5th industrial revolution, and complement Kenya’s Vison 2030, Science, Technology and Innovation Strategy for Africa (STISA) and multiple UN SDGs. The training also aimed at closing the gender parity on training and equipping human resource with skills in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) in Kenya for equitable competition in employment and entrepreneurial fields.

Role of the TVET institutions in bridging skills gaps

KNATCOM through the Ministry of Education acknowledge the role of the TVET institutions in bridging skills gaps and mismatch that leads to high rates of youth unemployment experienced in most developing countries. In line with The Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Act No. 29 of 2013 provide the legal framework for the training in Technical and Vocational Colleges and National Polytechnics in Kenya and United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) through its International Centre for Technical and Vocational Training and Education (UNEVOC), the Commission seeks to address this though annual capacity development for TVET ToTs and mainstreaming of best practices and enhanced experiential knowledge that contributes to the achievement of national, regional and global developmental targets.

In addition to mainstreaming 21st Century learning design and ICT Tools to enhance training of skills in TVET institutions, the training also imparted knowledge on emerging developments in knowledge society and paradigms, trends, technologies and innovation; equipped trainers with information on emerging opportunities and best practices including entrepreneur skills and intellectual property; and offered a platform to deliberate on challenges and constraints to uptake and mainstreaming emerging technologies and innovations in TVET training programmes.

The training was facilitated by Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM), Kenya Industrial Research and Development Institute (KIRDI); Kenya National Innovation Agency (KeNIA); Micro and Small Enterprise Authority (MSEA); Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TVETA).
