KNATCOM marks the International Day of Sport for Peace and Development (IDSPD)
On 6 April 2026 the Commission together with UNESCO Regional Office for Eastern Africa and Kenyatta University marked the International Day for Physical Activity and the International Day of Sport for Peace and Development (IDSPD) at Kenyatta University sports fields with the theme “Sport: Building Bridges, Breaking Barriers,” . This event brought together students, faculty members, and partners to reaffirm the transformative power of sport and physical activity in promoting peace, inclusion, and sustainable development. The day featured tree planting and physical education activities, symbolizing the intersection between healthy lifestyles, environmental sustainability, and social cohesion. Participants engaged in activities that highlighted sport as a unifying force and an effective tool for fostering dialogue, resilience, and community well-being. Speaking through action, the celebrations underscored the Commission’s message that sport is not just a physical pursuit, but a platform for peace, development, and mutual understanding. By aligning physical activity with environmental stewardship, the initiative also reinforced the importance of nurturing both people and the planet for present and future generations. The Commission commends Kenyatta University and all partners who made the event a success and continues to support initiatives that leverage sport to advance the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda, particularly in the areas of health, youth empowerment, peacebuilding, and environmental sustainability.

The event was graced by Dr. Joel Ongoto Ag. Deputy Secretary General, Research and Resoiurce Mobilization at KNATCOM, Prof. Caroline Thoruwa the Deputy Vice Chancellor Research, Innovation and Outreach at Kenyatta University, Mr. Hugue Ngendeu Ngatta Programme Specialist, Social and Human Sciences at UNESCO Regional Office for Eastern Africa, the Chairperson of the Department Physical Education, Exercise and Sports Science Dr. Juliah Wambui Githang’a and the UNESCO Chair Inclusive and Sustainable Physical Education and Sports for Community Development Dr. Jane Kamau among other dignitaries. Moments from the day captured the spirit of unity, teamwork, and shared responsibility proof that when we move together, we grow together.
