SENSITIZING THE MANAGEMENT OF COASTAL REGION UNIVERSITIES ON ESTABLISHMENT OF UNESCO CHAIRS

The Kenya National Commission for UNESCO (KNATCOM), through a collaboration of the Education and Culture Programmes, successfully conducted a sensitization forum for the three coastal universities: Taita Taveta University, Technical University of Mombasa and Pwani University regarding the establishment and operationalization of UNESCO Chairs in the universities based on their areas of expertise. The sensitization mission, held from 8th to 14th June 2025, brought together management from the three respective institutions of higher learning within the coastal region to enhance their understanding of the UNESCO Chairs Programme and explore opportunities for participation. Notably, None of the Universities at the Coastal Region host a UNESCO Chair and hence the importance of the sensitisation mission.
The forum aimed to raise awareness on the strategic role of UNESCO Chairs in promoting research, capacity building, and knowledge sharing in priority areas aligned with UNESCO’s mandate. Participants received detailed guidance on the application process, requirements, and benefits of hosting a UNESCO Chair, including fostering international academic collaboration and contributing to national development goals.

The KNATCOM team was led by the KNATCOM Board Chairperson, Prof. Mohamed Rajab, Ph.D, E.B.S and Ag. Secretary General Dr. James Njogu, HSC. KNATCOM remains committed to supporting Kenyan universities in leveraging the UNESCO Chairs Programme as a platform for excellence in research, innovation, and global partnership.
