Marking the World Environment Day 2025

KNATCOM Joins National Celebrations for World Environment Day 2025

The Kenya National Commission for UNESCO (KNATCOM) participated in the national celebrations of World Environment Day (WED) 2025, held on 5th June at Tharaka University in Tharaka Nithi County. The event was organized by the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) and the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry, in collaboration with the Tharaka Nithi County Government.

This year’s celebration brought together stakeholders from across the country under the global theme “Beat Plastic Pollution.” The event highlighted the urgent need to address plastic pollution, which continues to fuel climate change, biodiversity loss, and public health risks. Through partnerships like this, Kenya reaffirms its commitment to global efforts promoting sustainable plastic management and environmental conservation.

Major Policy Milestone Launched

The event was officiated by Dr. Deborah Barasa, Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry. During the event, she launched the National Colour Codes for Waste Segregation, as outlined in the Environmental Management and Coordination (Waste Management) Regulations, 2024. This milestone is expected to standardize waste sorting practices at the source and strengthen the country’s efforts in sustainable waste management.

  • Dr. Eng. Festus Ngeno – Principal Secretary, Environment and Climate Change
  • H.E. Muthomi Njuki – Governor, Tharaka Nithi County
