Building a Greener Future
The Kenya National Commission for UNESCO, in collaboration with the Kenya Forest Service conducted a tree-planting initiative to commemorate #MazingiraDay celebrated on 10th October every year. Over 1,000 indigenous tree seedlings were planted at Gatare Forest in Murang’a County, within the Aberdare ranges, with active participation from members of Kenya Forest Service, the Gatare Community Forest Association, and key stakeholders.
This effort aligns with the Kenyan Government’s target of planting 15 billion trees by 2030, a critical step toward increasing national tree cover and addressing climate change. So far, KNATCOM has planted over 5,000 trees across various regions in the country.
The Board, led by Prof. Mohamed Rashid and Acting Secretary General Dr. James Njogu, commended the staff for their dedication and encouraged them to continue planting trees on their own land. Dr. Njogu also reminded staff that tree planting is a key target within the organization’s 21st Cycle GoK Performance Contract.
