The Education Progarmme Expert Committee for the Kenya National Commission for UNESCO is established under Part v of the KNATCOM Act 2013. The expert Committee is chaired by the Director General, Ministry of Education as provided in section 32 (2) of the Act and its membership is drawn from all the State Departments in the Ministry, Ministry SAGAS and academia.  The main function of this committee is to facilitate implementation of the recommendations from regional and global platforms on education and provide expert advisory service to the ministry to inform policy and programme reforms.  The Committee also facilitates effective engagement and participation by Kenyan delegation in major regional and global education meetings and conferences and tracking of the implementation of the declarations and commitments. The committee is leading process of monitoring and reporting on SDG4 and CESA 2016-25 as per the Nairobi Declaration and Call for Action on Education 2018.

The committee has been in operation since 2017 and as per the KNATCOM Act 2013, membership is renewed every three years and  new committee was inaugurated in September 2020. In this regard, an induction is critical to enhance the capacity of the committee to deliver on its mandate by holding a three-day induction workshop for all members. The induction workshop aimed at enhancing the capacity of the committee members to deliver on their mandate as per the provisions in the KNATCOM ACT 2013. The meeting was held from 16th -18th March 2021 at Morendat Training Centre Naivasha and was officially opened by the Chairman of the Board, KNATCOM Dr. Misigo Amatsimbi   and  graced by the Secretary General, Kenya National Commission for UNESCO Dr. Evangeline Njoka (MBS). Members were taken through an introduction to UNESCO and KNATCOM and a discussion on their roles in the Commission. Key areas related to UNESCO thematic areas were also discussed including UNESCO Conventions, Research in UNESCO and data and its relationship to Sustainable Development Goals. The key output of the meeting was the development of an action plan and establishment of thematic subcommittees.
