UNESCO encourages the design of effective science and technology education programmes by promoting gender-sensitive, socio-culturally and environmentally relevant policies and curricula.
It promotes a multidisciplinary approach to science and technology education and gives particular attention to the provision of basic knowledge, life skills and scientific literacy for all, as well as preparation for the world of work.
Through an interdisciplinary approach, UNESCO helps its Member States to improve the quality and relevance of science, engineering and mathematics education, in order to respond to social, economic and cultural needs and enhance learning outcomes.
The organization contributes to the promotion of scientific literacy and public awareness of science, and the preparation of youth for scientific careers with special emphasis on children and women in developing countries.
Curricula and learning content need to ensure science education for all. To this end, UNESCO stresses the need for regular revision of curricula to bring out new discoveries and debates in science, as well as innovative concepts and methods in science teaching. It supports the use of ICTs for wider access to teaching materials and programmes of quality.
The ultimate goal is a science education which promotes peace, helps poverty reduction and advocates environmental protection and sustainable development.
